Costco Shepherd’s Pie Is Not Good

We have tried the Costco Shepherd’s Pie on two occasions and were disappointed both times. It was really unfortunate that nobody in our house liked this meal as it is massive and a BUNCH of food went to waste.

We normally feed unwanted leftovers to our pups but there is so much salt in the Shepherd’s Pie that it ended up in the trash instead.

This review will cover everything you need to know about this meal including, how to cook, improvement suggestions, serving suggestions, calories and cost.

Cooking Instructions for Costco Shepherds Pie

When the pie comes out of the oven it looks beautiful with a slightly browned crust surrounding a pile of fluffy mashed potatoes.

You really do need to put the pie on a baking sheet before it goes into the oven or you will dealing with a hot mess when you try to take it out.

Flavor

The pie has a tender crust, loads of fluffy mashed potatoes and seasoned ground beef with a mix of corn, peas, carrots and mushrooms.  The filling is basted in a sauce made from beef stock, soy sauce and Burgundy wine.

There is an interesting mix of flavors but the dominant flavor is “salty”.

I really, really wanted to like the Shepherd’s Pie.  The ingredients are loaded with things that my family loves but Costco went horribly wrong with the salt content and the Burgundy sauce.

In general I am not a picky eater but this was something that I could not force myself to eat.

Price

The pie currently costs $3.29 per pound.  Each pie weighs over five pounds so expect to pay around $20 for this meal.

You can feed at least eight people with this massive meal so at around $2.50 per serving you are getting a great deal (if you like the flavor).

Other Take and Bake Options from Costco

If you are trying to decide between the Shepherd’s Pie and some of the other Take and Bake meals then here are our thoughts on some other options.

If you want a massive meal to feed a crowd then the Costco Chicken Pot Pie is a better tasting option.  The Pot Pie takes just about as long to cook and the creamy chicken and veggie filling is delicious.  We prefer the flaky crust on the pot pie to the heavy mashed potatoes on the Shepherd’s Pie.

If what you like about the Shepherd’s Pie is the mix of ground beef and mashed potatoes then the Costco Meatloaf and Mashed Potatoes Meal is worth looking at instead.  The serving size of the Meatloaf meal is much smaller so you won’t be eating leftovers for a week.  Personally, we think the meatloaf meal tastes better than the Shepherd’s Pie.

Another tasty “Beef Plus Carbs” option is the tray of Costco Stuffed Peppers.  The peppers are stuffed with a mix of seasoned rice and cooked ground beef stuffed into colorful bell peppers.  In addition to being a hearty meal from the beef and rice there is also a delicious touch of sweetness from the peppers that you don’t get from the Shepherd’s Pie.
